RECENT NEWS

May 25 -31, 2008: A team from International Telecommunication Union based in Geneva (Mr. Wisit Atipakayoon, and Mr. Kawasumi Yasuhiko visited 10 out of 22 villages, where we have built communication centers. Mr. Paul Bird from, Nepal Library Foundation based in Canada also accompanied the group.

The names of the villages they went were Narchyang, Paudwar, Ghara, Shikha, Khibang, Gharamdi, Tikot, Rima, Ramche and Nangi. They visited the communication centers and schools of those villages. The ITU team came for monitoring and evaluating the activities of Nepal Wireless Networking Project. ITU had provided equipment worth about USD30,000 for our wireless project.

May 18 -24: Nepal Library Foundation based in Canada donated $5,000 for our project. We used the money for buying 14 computers. We handed those computers over to Tikot High School and Himanchal Higher Secondary School (7 computers each school). With the help of Help Nepal Network Kathmandu, those computers were put in LTSP system and are being used for providing e-library materials and Internet browsing. We have used open source software in those computers.

May 11, 2008: Non Resident Nepalis (NRNs) from Russia have contributed 32 computers to 10 schools in six districts. NRNA spokesperson Dr Jugal Bhurtel handed over the computers to Magasaysay winner Mahabir Pun and principal of Arunodaya Secondary School Nani Ram Basnet at a function at the NRN secretariat, to be distributed to schools in Kathmandu, Myagdi, Kaski, Tahanu and Makawanpur. Those computers were distributed to Landruk Ama Samuha (2), Sangam High School Chandrakot (2), Adarsha High School Rima (2), Narchynag High School (2), Dana High School (2), Swanta Primary School (2), Paudwar High School (1), Hattisunde High School (2), Thingan High School (2), Phaparbari High School (2), Himanchal High School (4) and Lamagaun (1). March 10 -13, 2008: Danish Ambassador with his team visited to Tolka, Bhichuk, Majhgaun and Chandrakot village and observed how people in the villages are using the wireless network and how it has been useful for the villagers. Mahabir Pun gave the tour to the group for three days. Government officials of High Level Commission for Information Technology (Dr. Madan Pariyar and Mr. Manohar Bhattarai), and officials of Department of Education ( Mr. Baburam Bhattarai and Mr. Jit Thapa) also joined the tour. The team from Danish Embassy and Government of Nepal were very impressed with the services we are providing for the villagers.

February 25, 2008: Three associations of Nepalese in Atlanta Georgia donated USD 1,600 to help build computer lab in Bhichuk village of Kaski district. We used the money to buy two computers, two wireless radios, and networking accessories connected the primary school of the village to Nepal Wireless Network. About 90% of the population of Bhichuk village are Dalits. Baburam Pariyar is the chairman of the school management committee and he is an energetic person. The villagers are very thankful for the support.
